Hi everyone,
Thank you again for your participation in the recent local meeting. There was a productive discussion around several game situations, including the application of shooting space.
Following the discussion on shooting space, I reached out for clarification to ensure we are aligned with the correct interpretation at the state level. After review with Lissa Fickert, the clip below should be ruled as shooting space. Nowhere in the rule book does it state, the defender is entitled to run through the 8m and be exempt from shooting space. She can simply go a different direction to get to and mark the attacker she wishes to mark. It is her responsibility to avoid obstructing free space to goal. If she does run through the 8m arc and is marking an attack player within a sticks length, the defender would not be in shooting space.
This clarification reflects the expected standard for application moving forward and should be used to ensure consistency across all contests.
A couple other reminders as the season gets underway, we need to be rotating correctly. When working 2 person games, we rotate every 3 goals scored. When working 3 person games, we rotate every 2 goals. This prevents the same official consistently refereeing the same thing.
Lastly, when we arrive 30 minutes early to our games, we must meet with the clock operator to ensure they know the proper timing procedures. We also need to ensure someone is at the table prior to starting games. This is mandatory so there is an individual to help manage cards and/or team requested timeouts among other things. They should also have an air horn at the table.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
Thanks,
Brett Wane
